Readability scores like Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level show up in word processors, SEO tools, and word counters everywhere โ but most people have never been told exactly what they measure, which leads to two opposite mistakes: ignoring the score entirely, or chasing a high score at the expense of writing that actually needed to be precise.
Readability formulas like Flesch Reading Ease don't read your writing for meaning, logic, or accuracy โ they can't. They're built from two purely mechanical inputs: average sentence length (words per sentence) and average word complexity (syllables per word). Shorter sentences and shorter words push the score toward "easy." Longer sentences and multi-syllable words push it toward "difficult." A Grade Level score translates that same math into roughly what U.S. school grade a reader would need to comfortably follow the text.
This is the part most people miss. A high readability score doesn't mean your writing is clear, well-organized, or logically sound โ and a low score doesn't mean it's bad. Specifically, the formula has no idea whether:
