Word Count Requirements for Every Common Type of Writing
A deeper reference guide, with the reasoning behind each limit
Word and character limits aren't arbitrary โ most exist for a real structural reason, whether that's a technical constraint (a platform truncating text at a fixed character count), a grading standard, or a pattern that simply performs better with readers. Knowing why a limit exists usually tells you how strictly to treat it.
Academic writing
- College application essays: The Common App caps its main personal essay at 650 words, with a 250-word minimum. This is a hard technical limit โ the text box stops accepting input at word 651.
- Undergraduate essays: Length requirements vary widely by course, but 1,000โ2,500 words is typical for a standard essay assignment, with the number usually reflecting how many distinct points the assignment expects you to develop.
- Graduate and thesis writing: Requirements are often set by department or program rather than a single standard, ranging from a few thousand words for a seminar paper to tens of thousands for a full thesis.
Professional and business writing
- Cover letters: 250โ400 words. Long enough to make a real case, short enough that a hiring manager reads the whole thing.
- Resume summaries: 50โ75 words. This section exists to be skimmed in seconds, not read closely.
- Executive summaries: Typically 5โ10% of the full document length, giving a decision-maker the conclusion without requiring the full report.
- Press releases: 400โ600 words is standard โ long enough for the full story, short enough that an editor can run it with light edits.
Content marketing and SEO
- Blog posts (SEO-focused): 1,000โ2,000 words tends to perform well for informational search queries, giving enough room to cover a topic thoroughly without padding.
- Meta descriptions: About 150โ160 characters โ a technical constraint, since search engines truncate longer descriptions in results pages with an ellipsis.
- Product descriptions: Usually 100โ300 words, balancing enough detail to inform a purchase decision against a reader's limited patience on a shopping page.
Social media and digital platforms
- Tweet / X post: 280 characters is the free-tier limit โ a hard technical cutoff.
- Instagram captions: Technically allow up to 2,200 characters, but engagement data consistently shows the first 125โ150 characters matter most, since that's what displays before "more" truncates the rest.
- LinkedIn posts: Similar pattern โ a 3,000 character technical limit, but the visible preview cuts off much earlier, so the opening lines carry the most weight.
- SMS messages: 160 characters per segment is a technical protocol limit (GSM-7 encoding) that predates smartphones and still applies to standard text messages today.
Creative writing
- Short story: 1,000โ7,500 words, per most literary magazine submission guidelines.
- Novella: 17,500โ40,000 words.
- Novel: 70,000โ100,000 words for most genres, though epic fantasy and literary fiction often run longer, and some genres (like romance) tend to run shorter.
